How to Make Your Own Camping Tent

What You'll Need
Waterproof tarps or other waterproof material
Sticks or posts in both long and short lengths

Knowing how to make your own camping tent can benefit you in more ways than one. The main reason for knowing how to make your own camping tent is the obvious money saving issue. However, one of the other main reasons is survival. Knowing how to make your own camping tent could actually save your life in a survival situation by giving you the knowledge of what items to use and how to put those items together usefully to give you shelter.

Step 1 – Prepare the Tarps

Lay your tarp out flat on the ground. Using a knife or other sharp object cut a small hole into each corner of the tarp. These holes will be for the posts so they need to be just a slight bit smaller than the post themselves in order for the tarp to remain secure. Cut the rope into four pieces and run each piece through the corner holes of the tarp. This will be used to secure the tent later. Do not tie the rope.

Step 2 – Place Your Tent

Locate a suitable location for your camping tent area. In the middle of the area place one of the larger posts. Ensure that the post is secure because this will be the center of your camping tent space. Once the middle post is secure place the prepared tarp centered on the post. Remember, placing your tent in the proper location is vital. Ensure it is on smooth level ground with no inclines or hazards. You also want to make sure that the site you choose for your camping tent has enough room for a campfire. Campfires should be placed at least 2 feet away from the mouth of the tent for safety.

Step 3 - Secure the Tent

Move to each corner of the tarp. Taking the corner piece pull the corner out and down to form a diagonal. Do not pull the tarp to far. You are only trying to get a taut diagonal from the middle post to the ground. Secure the corner by placing one of the sticks through the previously made hole. When all corners have been placed you will have a pyramid shaped camping tent.

Step 4 – Finishing Up

Now that the tent is in place move to each corner and carefully tie the bits of rope to the stick. Secure the tent to the sticks until you reach the desired tautness. If you feel uneasy about the strength of the tent use stones or large rocks to further hold down the corners. Once everything is in place for your camping tent, move your supplies in and start your camping fire.

With this easy set up you can camp on the spot. You may even save your own life and get the shelter you need in an emergency. Just remember that most of the tools are already there. You just have to look for them.
