In order to install a storm door that will protect your home's entryway from the weather, it must fit properly. Follow these guidelines to measure a storm door so you can purchase the correct-sized door.

Step 1 - Choose the Style of Storm Door You Want

Select the type of storm door you want to install. Storm doors come in a variety of materials, with sliding glass panels and with mesh screens only.

Step 2 - Measure the Height and Width of the Door Frame

The storm door will fit onto the exterior door frame, so measure the frame's height, width, and depth. Measure the height at the center of the doorway, and at the left and right edge. Record the smallest height you measure. Measure the doorway width at 12 inches from the top, across the center of the doorway, and 12 inches from the bottom, then write down the smallest width for your door. Measure the doorway from the inside edge of the door frame to the opposite door frame's inside edge.

Step 3 - Measure the Depth of the Frame

Storm doors must attach to a wood door frame. You will need to have at least 1 inch of depth to attach the storm door securely.
