Knowing how to measure replacement windows properly is the first step to a successful replacement window installation. There are two essential measurements in installing a replacement window – the window opening measurement and the measurement of the old window. Aside from the proper measurements, the replacement window should conform with the style and materials of your home or office. Below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to measure replacement windows.
Determine the Type of Window Replacement
The first step in measuring a replacement window is to decide the type of windows that you will use as a replacement. There are windows that use rough opening and windows that are replaced within the insides of the present window frame. To replace a window, it is practical to measure the rough opening by removing the old window. If there is difficulty in the old window removal, measure the frame opening of the existing window. You can purchase the appropriate replacement window at your local home improvement depot. If you cannot find a readily available window replacement at your local home improvement you can search the internet for manufacturers of customized windows and order from them.
Measure the Width of the Window Opening
The next step is to measure the width of the window. To get an accurate measurement of the width of the window is to do it in three points. First is to evaluate the window’s frame topmost width, then the middle part, and the last is to measure the bottom part. Use a tape measure, that will clearly determine if the bottom, mid and upper points of the width of the window are the same.
Measure The Length of the Window Opening
After measuring the width you now have to measure the length of the window opening. Evaluate the length of the window at two points to get an accurate measurement by measuring the upper and lower length of the window opening. If the window opening is wide, take measurements at three points which are the two sides and the middle part, just like measuring the width of the window.
Purchasing the Best Replacement Window
The measurement to be used in purchasing the replacement window is the smallest measurement of the width and the height you did in steps 1 and 2. This way, whatever small gap comes out of the difference in the measurement could be easily filled in. A slightly smaller window can easily be remedied by using wood fittings while a larger window size requires extensive resizing to be able to fit in your window opening.
You must have the accurate measurements of your window opening before you purchase a replacement window so that you can avoid the hassle of having a window that cannot fit in your window opening. If you have doubts about the accuracy of your measurement, it is recommended to do the measurements again or ask the assistance of a friend for a second opinion.
