How to Move a Dishwasher

Learning how to move a dishwasher can save you a lot of money when you are moving or replacing an old model with a new one. Whether you are looking to move the dishwasher because you are moving, or looking to install a new dishwasher, the information will be just as handy.

Step 1 - Turn off the Power

When working with electrical appliances, always turn off the power first. Find the electrical outlet that powers the dishwasher or turn off the breaker that powers the unit. If you are using a unit that is plugged into a wall, unplug the unit.

Step 2 - Pull the Dishwasher Out

To pull your dishwasher out from under the counter, you will first need to unscrew the unit from the countertop. This can be accomplished by removing two screws in the front of the dishwasher. You can access the screws by opening the door to the dishwasher. You should see two arms or tabs leading out from the machine to the countertop. These arms (or tabs) that keep the unit from tipping over when the door is opened and a tray full of dishes is sitting on it, need to be unscrewed from the countertop. Once removed, you should be able to easily slide the dishwasher out. Work slowly to avoid pulling water or power lines loose before you are ready.

Step 3 - Disconnect the Power and Water Lines

With the machine pulled out from the wall, you should notice three lines coming out of the dishwasher. There are two tubes and an electrical cord. Follow the electrical cord to the junction box on the back rear of the machine. The box will be protected by a cover that easily lifts out of place. Simply remove the two nuts which hold the wires in place and remove the cord. Replace the cover with the nuts inside. Follow the tube which leads to the sink. This is often hooked up to the garbage disposal. Pull the tube free from the connection. This is your disposal tube. The other tube is your feed tube and needs to be removed by removing the nut which keeps it in place. Use a towel to wipe up any water that is still in the line.

Step 4 - Use a Dolly

Now that the dishwasher has been completely disconnected, you are ready to move it. This is best accomplished with a dolly. Cover the front of the dishwasher with a blanket to keep it from being scratched by the dolly. Depending on the model, you may want to put the front end of the dolly on the side of the dishwasher. Often the bottom of the dishwasher is only a plate that will pop off if you try to lift it with the unit. You should be able to easily wheel the dishwasher to its destination.
