A distressed wood table is an design option that gives a more rustic appearance to a room. You can create your own distressed look to an existing table by using a painting technique, described here.
Step 1: Preparing the Wood
Before starting to paint the distressed wood table you have to prepare the wood properly, otherwise you won’t achieve a perfect finish. Make sure that the table is naturally distressed, that is, don’t use a hammer to create the distressed look but rather use a piece of wood or a chair to create the distressed look. Check that overall it is a pleasing distressed looking wood table.
Step 2: Choosing a Technique
As mentioned above, various techniques can be used to paint a distressed wood table, all offering unique end results. Inform yourself well as to which method will suit your needs and adopt it. Here is a description of the sanding and staining technique.
Step 3: Choosing the Paint
To paint a realistic distressed wood table, it is necessary to pick two complementary colors. Look through many distressed furniture examples so that you will get a good idea of what type of colors are needed. Usually one color should be darker in tone than the other in order to produce the desired effect.
Step 4: Applying the First Paint
Now start by applying the first paint. In my opinion it is better to start with the darkest paint. Once the paint has dried, sand the whole table with 100-grit sandpaper, it is better if you do this manually, as in the end you will achieve a much better result.
Step 5: Cleaning the Table
By the first sanding you will notice that some parts of the table may have been exposed to bare wood, this is completely normal. Grab a damp cloth and clean off the dust.
Step 6: Applying the Second Paint
The next step is to apply the second color paint. Make sure to cover all of the wood, especially on the table top. Again, once it has dried sand it with 100-grit sandpaper. The latter will allow the first paint color to show.
Step 7: Applying the Sealer
The last thing to do is to apply a coat of wood sealer to the distressed look wood table. The sealer will help prevent wear and tear of the table.
If you are a beginner, it is much better to use an inexpensive wood table. You don't want to ruin an expensive wood table or even worse, an antique.
