How to Paint a Rain Gutter

What You'll Need
Putty knife
Latex paint
Mild soap
Breathing mask

If your home's rain gutter is in need of a new paint job, you may be wondering how to administer it. If so, read on to learn the basics of painting a rain gutter.

Step 1 - Prep Your Gutter

Begin by using a putty knife to scrape any old off paint off of your gutter. Next, soak a sponge or washcloth in a homemade cleaning solution of warm water and mild soap, then proceed to thoroughly clean your gutter.

Once the gutter has been sufficiently cleaned, use a garden hose to vigorously rinse out the cleaning solution. Also, make sure to don a breathing mask before proceeding with subsequent steps, as the fumes emitted by primer and paint can be quite potent.

Step 2 - Apply Your Primer

To ensure that your latex paint properly adheres to your gutter, apply a coat of ammonia-free oil-based metal primer. When used in conjunction with aluminum surfaces, primers that contain ammonia can give way to the formation of gas bubbles. When performing this step, use a clean paintbrush to apply the primer to your gutter in smooth, even strokes.

After the primer has been applied, consult the product's packaging to determine how much drying time it will require.

Step 3 - Apply Your Latex Paint

Once your primer has been given ample time to dry, you are free to apply your latex paint. Just like the previous step, use a clean paintbrush to apply your paint in smooth, even strokes and take care to allow the proper amount of drying time between coats.
