If your aluminum boat has gotten slightly worn-looking or you are just ready for a new look, then it is time to paint your boat. Before you begin, take the boat and balance it on two sawhorses. This will make painting the boat much easier to handle.
Once you have the boat balanced it is time to start sanding it down. Keep in mind, if your boat has not been painted before, this step is not necessary. However, if it has a coat of paint on it already, sand off the existing layer of paint. Once the boat has been completely sanded down you need to wash the boat really well. Washing the boat will get off any impurities or dirt that will later cause the paint to peel off of the boat.
After the boat is washed, apply a primer to the aluminum boat. There are several different types of primer from which to choose, however, an oil-based primer will work the best on aluminum surfaces. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on to the painting process. Once it is completely dry, begin painting your boat. Depending on several factors, you may want to apply a few coats of paint to the boat. Let it dry, and you'll be out sailing in no time.
