If you have any sort of metal pipes on the exterior of your home, you probably know from experience that they will rust when exposed to the seasons. Painting them is a great way to protect them while also blending them into the outside of your home. Here is a handy guide to painting those unsightly metal pipes.
Step 1: Clean off Old Paint/Rust
Before you can successfully apply any type of paint to old metal pipes you will need to scrape them clean of any rust and old paint. You need to use a sturdy hard bristled wire brush to do this. Remove the flakes of rust by using the brush in small areas at a time.
Step 2: Wash off Pipes
After you have cleaned off the rust and old paint, give the pipes a quick cleaning with some water and soap. Make sure to dry it off completely after you get some of the dirt and grime off of it.
Step 3: Prime Metal Pipes
For exterior paint to stick to the smooth surfaces of the metal pipes you will need to prime it. You can use a good exterior primer that is in a spray can or apply it with a brush.
Step 4: Paint Metal Pipes
Once the primer is dry you can go over it with your finish paint. Using a spray can is good for smaller projects. Hold the can at least 4 to 6 inches away from the pipes and spray in short bursts.
