How to Prevent Shadow Lines Caused by Timber Joists

Interior view of a lavishly furnished log home.

Using timber joists in a log home is one of the ways that builders add character and rich detail. The joists are exposed for this dramatic look and are mostly non-functional. Unfortunately, exposed joists can cause shadow lines throughout your home. Here are some steps you can take as your home is being built, which will prevent or reduce the occurrence of shadow lines.

Plan Accordingly

The most important step is to take some extra care in planning the placement of the timber joists themselves. Think about the relationship of the joists to lights, windows, and even the angle of the roofline.

Hang Lights from Beams

When installing lights, install the lights directly into the timber joists or hang them at a lower level. This will make sure the shadow lines do not affect the way the light shines on your living space.

Use Low Gloss Stain

Resist the urge to put the highest possible sheen on your joists. A slightly lower shine will make less shadow.
