A claw foot tub adds elegance and lasting beauty to your bathroom. Follow these steps to properly clean it.
Step 1 - Preparation
Wear old clothes that you do not mind ruining. Remove any rugs near your tub and all washcloths, shampoos, soap dishes, or other items placed on your tub. To protect the floor, lay plastic sheets or newspaper.
Step 2 - Clean the Inside
Fill the tub with warm water and add 1-cup of liquid bleach. Let it sit for 30 minutes to lift soap scum and dirt. Let it drain completely and inspect for visible stains that were not removed in this process. For these stains, put on your rubber gloves and make a paste of bleach powder and water and apply to the areas that need extra attention. Let this mixture sit on the spots for 10 minutes and wipe it with a damp sponge. Repeat the process until they are gone. When the inside of the tub is clean, you will be ready to address the outside of the tub.
Step 3 - Clean the Outside
To clean the outside of the tub, start at the top and work down. If you clean from the bottom up, dirty water will run down the tub when you get to the top that will soil where you just cleaned. Using the powdered bleach and sponge, go around the lip of the tub, paying close attention to any spots caused by shampoos or soaps. If there are stubborn stains, use the method for treating spots on the inner part of the tub.
Rinse well to remove the bleach powder grit. Mix 1-gallon of water in your bucket, adding in 2-tablespoons of dish liquid. Using your sponge, clean the outside body of your tub. If you have stubborn spots, use powdered bleach on them as well. Rinse well. Moving to the feet, again make a paste of powdered bleach and water. Apply it to the feet, taking care to get into the crevices. Gently scrub with a toothbrush and let it stand for 5 minutes. Rinse to see if the feet are clean. If not, repeat the process until they are clean.
Step 4 - Upkeep
Keeping products with dye in them, such as shampoo, bubble bath, and soaps off of the tub will help keep stains at bay. If you do get a stain, address it as soon as possible. Once a month, fill the tub with bleach and 1-cup of liquid bleach and let sit for 30 minutes to remove soap scum. These simple steps will keep your claw foot tub sparkling clean and looking new.
