Bathroom vent fans help pull smells and moisture away and out of the bathroom. Over time, these fans can either become noisy or stop working altogether. Luckily, bathroom fans are easy to replace. To begin, you must first remove the fan’s cover. With the right tools and a few tips, you can remove the cover quickly and safely.
Step 1 - Turn off the Power
It’s crucial that you first turn off the power to the vent fan. If you skip this step, you could hurt yourself. Simply flip the switch, or go to the breaker box and turn off the power to the whole room. If you do turn off the power to the entire room, make sure you still have adequate lighting or a flashlight to complete the project.
Step 2 - Set up Your Ladder
After you’ve turned the power off, get a ladder to help you safely reach the bathroom vent-fan cover. Make sure the ladder is sturdy and the correct height to reach the cover.
A too-tall ladder will make the job just as difficult as not having a ladder, and a too-short ladder will have you dangerously reaching above. If you have tall ceilings, and therefore you have to use a tall ladder, have a friend help you by holding the ladder steady while you complete the project.
Step 3 - Squeeze the Clips
Once you’re safely on the ladder, inspect your fan cover. If there are any screws, you will first have to unscrew them with a screwdriver. Put the screws in a cup or a small bag.
Then, pull straight down on the fan cover. You will see that the bathroom vent-fan cover is hanging down from just two spring clips. Squeeze the sides of the clips together.
Step 4 - Slide out the Hooks
As you squeeze the clips, you will see hooks coming from the mounting slots. Slide the hooks out of the slots, and gently pull the cover down. You should be able to easily remove it. Place the cover in a place where it won’t get lost while you complete repair work or install a new bathroom vent fan.
