In order to give your house a thorough spring clean, all blinds, including mini-blinds, need to be taken down and washed. Whether you want to temporarily remove your mini blinds to give them a clean or permanently remove them, taking them down is fairly simple and can be accomplished within minutes providing you follow these simple steps.
Step 1 - Position Yourself
If you are taking mini blinds down from windows that are positioned high up in a room, you will need to stand on a step ladder to avoid stretching. It will be easier to remove the mini blinds if you are at the same level as the blinds. It is sensible to ask a spouse or friend to hold the ladders for you to reduce the risk of an accident.
Step 2 - Open the Blinds
Blinds that are fully open are much easier to handle and remove than blinds that are in the closed position. Ensure that your mini blinds are open to their full extent.
Step 3 - Dismantle from Brackets
Most modern mini blinds are connected to the window and held into position by brackets. Slide the snaps out of the snap bracket and push the bracket towards the center of the mini blind. The bracket should slide out fairly easily. If however, the blinds have been up for a long period of time without being removed, it might be more difficult to dismantle them from the brackets, in which case a pair of pliers will help you to grip the sliding snaps and help to slide them out of the brackets.
Step 4 - Remove from the Center Brackets
On some occasions, particularly when the mini blind is extra wide and very long, it may be also attached to a center bracket to give the blind added support. If your mini blind does have a center bracket holding it in place, this obviously needs to be removed as well. This can be accomplished by using the same procedure as you did to remove the side brackets, although some models are simply a right-angled support bracket with a tab onto which a slot into the blind keeps it stable.
Step 5 – Pull the Mini Blinds Away from the Window
Once you have unattached both sides of the blinds from the brackets, hold each side of the blind and gently pull it forward. As soon as the mini blinds are completely free from the window, find a safe place for them to be left. Failing to leave them in a safe place may result in the blinds become damaged or broken.
Step 6 - Remove the Brackets
If you are removing a mini blind from a window permanently, you will want to also remove the brackets they were attached to. If you are just cleaning the blinds, leave the brackets in place. Use a small Phillips head screwdriver and unscrew all the screws from inside of the brackets. Once the screws have been removed, the brackets will become loose and fall free from the window frame.
It is most likely that your mini blinds are connected to the frame with brackets. If this is not the case, you will need to inspect what the blinds are connected to and unscrew the screws of the fittings which are keeping the blinds in position.
