There are various home remedies that you can use to remove water spots from wooden table tops or wooden floors. There are also many commercial cleaners available for removing water spots from wood; however, most of these commercial cleaners are expensive. Some commercial cleaners can remove the water spots on any wood surface, but they leave a different kind of stain in the long run. You can make chemical solutions from supplies found in your home to remove water spots from wood without needing to purchase a commercial cleaner. Below are 5 ways remove water spots from wood.
1. Use Dry Heat
Dry heat works the best to eliminate fresh water spots. Use a cloth or paper towel to immediately dry any standing water. Follow-up with the use of a hair dryer set at high heat to dry the area. Hold the hair dryer about 6 inches away from the spot and move it back and forth.
An alternative method is to use a clothes iron at a no-steam setting. Cover the water spot with a cloth towel and rub the iron over the towel for a few seconds. Continue the process until the water spot is removed.
2. Use Mayonnaise and Baking Soda
The use of a mayonnaise and baking soda mixture is effective at removing water spots on any wood surface. Mayonnaise and baking soda are not damaging to wood. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over the water spot, then sprinkle baking soda on top of it. The baking soda helps activate the effects of the mayonnaise. Let the mayonnaise and baking soda mixture sit in the water spotted area for a few hours. Wipe off the mixture using a clean, dry washcloth.
3. Use Toothpaste and Baking Soda
You can also use a non-gel, white toothpaste to remove water stains. Non-gelatinous toothpaste has an absorbing effect when applied to wood surfaces. Make a paste of toothpaste and baking soda. Put a portion of the paste into a clean cloth and rub it over the water spot area in a gentle, circular motion. Remove the paste from the wood and apply furniture polish.
4. Use Fine Grain Steel Wool
The use of a fine-grain steel wool is effective for removing water spots without damaging the wood surface. Simply wipe the water spot or stain with the steel wool gently in circular motions. Use a wood polish on table countertops or wax on floors to follow-up the process. Doing so will bring back the shine of the wood.
5. Use Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is effective for eliminating a water spot. It has an evaporating effect when applied. Simply wet a cloth with hydrogen peroxide and lay it on the stain for half an hour. Be sure to read the container's instructions, and mix it with water if you need to dilute it. Keep in mind that hydrogen peroxide will bleach things if you're not careful with it.
