How to Remove Windows in Brick Veneer Siding
If the windows in brick veneer siding just do not fit or blend with the new look of the house or simply are too old and energy-inefficient, consider replacing them with better ones. The first step in the process is removing the windows from the siding.
Plan the Removal
It is important to plan the entire process when working with more than one window. Determine which windows need to go by inspecting each one of them. Obtain all tools and materials needed for the task to avoid having to stop the work when a piece of material is not available.
Measure the Old Window Unit
Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of the old unit/s to be removed from the wall. Ensure that the measurements are accurate. Keep the record for future use when purchasing new units as replacement.
Purchase New Windows
Before working on the removal of the old unit, get the replacement/s ready to save time. This allows both removal and installation tasks done on the same day. Get replacements that exactly fit the dimensions of the old ones.
Remove the Window Trims
Remove the indoor and exterior window trims using a prybar. If the window is situated high above reach, use a ladder to gain access to the trim on the exterior wall. Be careful not to damage the existing brick veneer. Use eye goggles to protect the eyes from accidental chips in the wall. Set the trims aside.
Remove the Mounting Hardware
Remove any of the mounting hardware fastening the unit in place both on the top and bottom sills. The unit is usually fastened to the framing on the wall with a set of screws. The screws can be removed easily using a drill and a screwdriver bit. If the screws are not too hard to remove, a screwdriver will do the trick.
Remove the Entire Unit
Carefully lift the old unit out of the window opening. Use a hammer to lightly tap it if it is too tight. If possible, remove the window from the outside of the home to avoid getting dust and debris into the interior of the home. Just be careful when working on an elevated location. Confirm that no one or nothing is right under the ladder when doing so.
Remove the Other Windows
Following the same procedure above, remove every other unit in the brick veneer siding working as carefully as possible. While you are at it, install the replacements by reversing the order of things.
Install the Replacements
Slide each replacement bottom first into its corresponding opening on the wall. Let it fit snugly and evenly before securing the screws in position. Install the trims on both interior and exterior parts of the wall and caulk the joints for waterproofing.
