Being able to undertake a repair to a broken baby crib is a handy skill to have in the event that a sudden defect arises. If you find that the defect does not affect the integrity of the crib, you can follow the steps required for an effective repair.

Step 1 – Inspection

Begin the process by thoroughly examining the baby crib to determine the cause of the defect and what it will take to repair it. To ensure that the crib remains safe, you should forgo a repair for the sake of a replacement if you discover any structural damage. Depending on the section that has suffered damage, you may be able to obtain a replacement for that section rather than the entire crib.

Avoid using any wood glue on the crib and replace parts that have suffered cracks. If you have retained the instruction manual, check it to determine whether the manufacturer has recommended a supplier where replacements can be obtained. If you require replacement parts that must be ordered, do this as soon as possible and put the baby to sleep elsewhere until it arrives.

Step 2 – Loose Fasteners

In the event that you find the rails of the baby crib are unstable or the lowering side rattles when it is used, check whether this is due to loose fasteners. After removing the mattress and any other bedding, gently move sections of the crib to help you find the location of loose fasteners.

Tighten them with the appropriate tool before moving it again to check whether this solves the problem and to see if the section feels firmer. If not, you may need to fit replacement screws and bolts or add washers to secure the join firmly.

Step 3 – Chips and Dents

Where the baby crib has suffered chips, dents or scrapes, use some fine sandpaper to remove the defect before wiping the repair site with a cloth dampened with water to clear away the resulting dust.

Step 4 – Loose Slats

Where individual slats on the baby crib have become loose, check the manner in which it is secured in place. If it is merely slotted into a hole, the problem may be due to the end of the slat or the recess becoming worn. Use a soft bristle brush to remove any loose chips or splinters that may be present and secure the slat by inserting a screw.

Step 5 – Replace

Where replacement parts are required for the crib, ensure that these are made by the same manufacturer as the original crib. Remove the damaged section by loosening the fasteners with the relevant tool, beginning with those at the upper end and working your way down. Attach the new section by reversing the procedure and firmly tightening the fasteners so that they are secure, but not enough to damage the wood beneath it. Once everything has been replaced, check the structure to ensure it is secure.
