How to Repair a Dishwasher Spray Arm

Your dishwashing machine may have a dishwasher spray arm that spread water and detergent on the dishes. The pump and motor assembly spread this water and the force moves the spray arms to reach all corners of the unit.

Each machine has different water pressure, and this could decrease with age or when particles get stuck in it. When there is a problem, follow the steps below to repair your dishwasher spray arm. For this project, you will need a screwdriver and a cleaning agent.

Step 1: Locate the Dishwasher Spray Arm

Locate the dishwasher spray arm and inspect it visually and physically. Remove the bottom dish rack and manually spin the spray arm at the bottom of the unit. This circular movement will determine if the arm moves without getting stuck.

Exert slight upward pressure on an end by pulling slightly; the component should wobble in a vertical manner. Its seams should be solid as dishes won’t receive adequate water pressure if they are damaged. If water comes out of the seams, it could cause the whole unit to leak.

If the dishwasher has a spray tower, exert upward pressure on it and then let it drop back to the original position. This should be an easy movement with no hindrance. Remove the top dish rack to perform the same procedure to test the functionality of the upper spray arm (if there is one).

Step 2: Remove the Spray Arm

Remove the spray arm if it is faulty or you have not identified a problem. Before you begin, switch off the power to the dishwasher. Clean the piece by soaking it in warm, soapy water to get rid of grime. Rinse it with a high-pressure spray of water to dislodge the residual debris.

Use your hand to unscrew the spray tower by removing the bolt in the center of the spray arm, or manually rock the spray arm until it disconnects. You may have to use a screwdriver or turn the component in the opposite direction. Rotating motors usually have reversed threads to keep them from unscrewing themselves while the dishwasher is in motion.

Reduced pressure from a faulty spray arm results in dirty dishes when the dishwasher can’t wash properly due to pressure problems. Door and dish washer damage could result when water could be diverted to other places.

Although dishwasher spray arm replacements can be purchased, it is best to go through the manufacturer or make a note of the model and research dishwasher spray arm replacement. The process is relatively easy, but there may be certain guidelines that need to be followed in order to obtain clean dishes.
