How to Repair a Swamp Cooler Motor

Repairing a swamp cooler motor is a job that can be easily done with the right tools and the right directions. Below you will find common problems when dealing with swamp cooler motors and how to fix these problems as well.

The first thing you will want to do is to locate any leaks that may be present in your motor.

Step 1 - Catch Pan

First off, you will want to take the water out of the catch pan by dumping it, and then using a wet vacuum for the rest. Let it dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Step 2 - Locate and Seal

Now you have the chance to repair leaks by sealing them up. This is done by applying your asphalt-based sealant generously to the area that has the leak. Make sure you apply more than enough sealant, or it may wear down over time and not protect as much as it should be. If you have covered your bases with the leaks, it is time to move on to checking out the belt.

Step 3 - Inspect

You will want to inspect your belt for any cracks or splitting. If any of those things are present, it's time to replace the belt.

Step 4 - Remove Old Belt

Using a wrench, loosen the motor mounts so that the belt is easily removed. Simply remove the belt, and use that as a guide when purchasing a new one.

Step 5 - Insert New Belt

Simply put the new belt in in the same way you removed the old belt. Make sure it is in properly and is snug before securing into place. After it is properly inserted, tighten the belt as well as the the mounts to hold it in place securely. So far you have taken care of any leaks, and replaced the belt. It's now time to look at your water pump.

Step 6 - Hot Air

Maybe the problem with your swamp cooler motor is that it is blowing hot air all the time. This means that the problem likely has something to do with your water pump. Make sure you test it on the lowest setting possible, and see if it still blows hot air. If it does, continue with the steps below.

Step 7 - Turn Off

You will want to turn our water pump off, and take it out. Then disconnect the water feed hose as well.

Step 8 - Test It

Take your water pump and place it into water and turn it on. If it starts to run, that simply means there is probably a clog somewhere that needs to be cleaned out.

If the water pump does not run, then unfortunately, you will need to purchase a new one. Just like the belt, it is easiest to bring your water pump with you so you are purchasing a correct model, etc.
