Infrared radiant heaters are very common forms of heating and are especially useful during the cold winter months. Infrared light is used to control your TV remote control and can also be used for specific types of heat radiation. The infrared heaters work by allowing high temperatures to flow through the heater with the assistance of electromagnetic radiation. They are often small, portable heaters that can be moved from room to room. Patio heaters work in a similar way because the main heating element is a glass-enclosed light bulb that allows heat to be radiated out into the room or patio.

Step 1 - Heater Won't Turn On

If the problem you are having is that the heater will not turn on, then there are many things that you can check. First it's a good idea to check that the electrical outlet works properly. Try plugging an electrical outlet tester into one of the sockets.

Alternatively you can just plug another appliance into the socket to find out whether it works. Then, take a look at the cable going to the infrared heater and check that it's not crushed or damaged in any way. If there is any damage to your cable or plug then you will need to get this replaced.

If you have a gas heater, one possible reason that it is will no longer work properly is that you have run out of gas. Press the knob down to check that you can hear gas coming out of the nozzle. If there is no gas coming through, then there is nothing available to burn. The lack of gas could also be caused by blockages in the pipes or vents.

Step 2 - Check Fuses and Circuit Breakers

Check that the fuses and circuit breakers are all working correctly and that nothing has tripped the circuit. There is quite often a fuse somewhere in these appliances.

If the cable is crushed or damaged and you need to replace it, the easiest option is to cut the cable so it's shorter and reattach another plug. Depending on where the damage is located, you may be able to save the cable. If you do not feel that you can repair this alone, be sure to consult a professional because your heater is a safety hazard that should be treated with great care.

You will also need to look for the power cord. It is usually either plugged in or is soldered onto a circuit board. If it's plugged in, then simply plug a replacement in. Soldering these connections on is very easy because it's only two wires and you have loads of space to work with.

Step 3 - Clean Nozzles

If you have a gas heater, the problem could be caused by blockages in the pipes or nozzles. Use compressed air to blow out the pipes, and then use a vacuum to clean the front of the grill. This will allow the gas to flow easier which should in turn make the heater much hotter.

It's also important to check for leaks. You will need to cover the pipes in liquid soap and watch out for bubbles. If there are any leaks in the pipes then the pipes need to be replaced.
