How to Repair Awning Windows

One of the unique features of awning windows is that they have 2 sets of hinges which enables them to open both ways: inward and outward. This is quite useful in the rainy areas as you can keep the windows open for air circulation and the water will slide off the panes. However, the moving parts of the window can get damaged quite often and hence need frequent repair. The good news is that repairing the window is not a very difficult job and you can do it yourself instead of calling a professional for it. Simply follow these steps to repair your awning window:

Step 1 – Identify the Problem

You need to identify the cause for window’s malfunctioning. It could be as visible as a broken pane and as hidden as window’s internal mechanism.

Step 2 – Look for Clues

Carefully open and close the window and look/listen for any clue to the problem.

Step 3 – Look for Inner Problems

Apart from broken pane, check for the proper working of all hinges, screws and braces separately.

Step 4 – Remove the Window

If you are not able to detect the problem, you need to remove the window. To do so, first of all take the screen off the awning window and disengage the operator arms.

Step 5 – Remove the Sash

Remove the sash. Do ensure that the window is not locked.

Step 6 – Access the Hidden Defective Parts

Now you will have the access to all the parts of the window, including the ones that were hidden earlier. Carefully test the internal mechanism of the window to look for defective parts.

Step 7 – Purchase the New Parts

After identifying what the problem is, order the relevant parts from the manufacturer or spare parts suppliers.

Step 8 – Type of Possible Parts

Depending on the problem you might need only minor parts such as the stretcher slips or you might require some integral parts such as crank lever, operator crank or a sash.

Step 9 – Install the New Parts

Now install the required parts. To remove the defective parts and install the new ones, follow the guidebooks of the window and the parts.

Step 10 – Test the Window

Test the window multiple times, including some rough testing such as opening and closing with a bit of force, to make sure that the window works properly.

Step 11 – Verify the Installation

If you still face problems with the window, just make sure that you have put back all the parts, which you removed during the process, properly and that the window’s mechanism is not facing any obstructions.

Step 12 – Clean the Window

It would be a good idea to clean all the parts with a damp cloth to remove any dust and other unwanted particles which may obstruct smooth movement of the hinges and the other parts of the window.
