Pebble paving is very common these days. You must have seen this across many swimming pools, entries and decks of finest, hotels, resorts and offices. These pavements are laid with a mixture of small pebbles using an epoxy adhesive to make gorgeous and sturdy nonskid surfacing. Recently, many people have started creating this type of pavements. This involves an easy process and most of the homeowners can follow it themselves. The pebbles used for this type of paving are very small in size in the range of 1/8 to 3/8 inches. Smaller size pebbles provide favorable results as compared to larger pebbles. The 2 components of epoxy adhesive comprising a resin and hardener are mixed for adhesion. The adhesive mix is then mixed with the natural quartz stones and laid over the existing concrete surface. It creates amazing epoxy stone flooring, which is very attractive and durable. The surfacing is a thin layer. It may wear out or chip off with time and need repairs.
Step 1 - Dressing up the Chipped Area
Chisel out chipped area to make it a rectangular shape. Remove all material to clear the patch.
Step 2 - Cleaning the Patch
Clean the patch to be filled with a wire brush and broom. Remove all debris and dust. Blow it off with a blower.
Step 3 - Repair the Substrate
Patch up the concrete layer with mortar, if that is also chipped or broken. Let the concrete dry and set. Allow it to stay for about 24 hours.
Step 4 - Applying Primer
Mix a small quantity of the epoxy resin and hardener in the prescribed ratio of 2:1 and apply a thin coat with a brush on the surface to be patched. Mostly the base surface is concrete.
Step 5 - Making a Mix
You can mix it in a concrete mixing tray by hand using trowel and a stick. Larger repairs may be like making a new pavement, in such a case you can make a mixture in a wheel barrow. The pebbles should get totally wet and blend with the adhesive. The mixture should be as dry as possible
Step 6 - Filling the Patch
Fill the patch to be repaired with the mixture. You can use a trowel for spreading the mixture. Make the surface level. Allow it to dry for 24 hours. It may help to test the mixture on a small area before actually applying it.
Step 7 - Re-Coating the Surface
Re-coat the repaired surface with a mix of resin and hardener. It will provide an extra strength against wear. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
