How to Repair Foam Roofing

Foam roofing is usually applied to the roof as a spray. It provides many benefits to the homeowner or the commercial building owner. Primarily, a foam roofing system provides a good amount of insulation. It helps to keep the hot air out during the summer and it helps to keep the warm air in during the winter months. Second, it also helps your roof from getting unwanted leaks and damage due to rain and other weather elements. Foam has natural waterproofing properties and when applied to the roof, it transfers those properties. There are other benefits as well. Foam roofing is generally lightweight and very durable. It will last a long time. But, like anything else it can get damaged. Here is what you need to do to repair the damaged foam roof.

Step 1 - Purchase the Kit

Take a trip to your local home improvement center and purchase a foam repair kit. Most foam roof repair kits come with the necessary tools and materials.

If you have a large area that needs patching, you may want to see if the foam can be purchased separately. Take a look at the kit to see how many square feet it will cover in a repair.

Step 2 - Get Onto the Roof

Get out your ladder and climb onto the roof surface. Whenever you are operating around heights, you should always enlist the help of a friend or family member. Have the friend hold the ladder while you climb onto the roof. This just ensures proper safety steps are taken.

Step 3 - Clean the Surface

Using a mild soap or detergent and water, clean the surface of the roof. Pay special attention to the areas that have been damaged or cracked. Rinse the roof. Allow the roof to dry a few hours in the sunlight. If it is a cloudy day, you may need to give it longer to dry.

Step 4 - Apply the Foam

Take out the foam roofing repair kit you purchased and read the instructions thoroughly. Make sure you know how to use the spray nozzles and how the foam will apply. Each kit has subtle differences and it is always good to know of the specific requirements before you begin the repair. Get back onto the ladder and on the roof. Apply the foam repair to the damaged portions of your roof. Smooth out, if necessary.

Step 5 - Allow Drying Time

Allow your foam repair to dry at least 24 hours.

Step 6 - Seal the Roof

With any foam roof, you should always roll on a foam roof sealant at least once a year. Why not time this maintenance practice with your repair work? Get back onto the roof and roll on the foam roof sealant.
