How to Replace a Dryer Centrifugal Switch

When a dryer tumbles but fails to produce heat, it may be time to replace the centrifugal switch. However, check other components that bring are known to bring about the same problem before making a replacement. This includes components such as air flow, igniter, coils, flame sensor, safety fuse, thermostat, time selector, and temperature selector. A good idea is to inspect all components in the device.

Step 1 - Assemble Necessary Tools

Buy a new centrifugal switch from a hardware or home supplies store. Take care to get the correct device for your model of dryer. Record the brand and model information before heading to the store or ordering online. This can help in buying the correct accessories to be used during repairs.

Collect necessary equipment such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and protective gear.

Step 2 - Enforce Safety

Dryers are powered by gas or electricity supply. Do not work on the appliance while it is still connected to a power outlet. Switch of the dryer and unplug it from power outlet.

Step 3 - Dismount Dryer

Use a screwdriver to remove the outer panel of the dryer, loosen the screws and carefully lift off the lid and place it in a safe position. This makes it possible to access the centrifugal switch located near the motor.

Step 4 - Disassemble Rear Panel

Use a screwdriver to remove the rear panel from the dryer. Always place screws from the appliance in a safe location. Take note where each set has been removed, this makes it easy when reassembling the appliance. Tip: Take a picture before removing parts to reference when you put it back together.

Step 5 - Locate the Motor

The drum can be accessed by dismounting the lint tray. Use screws to loosen the component and gently place it in a safe position. This can be done by using a putty knife to press the top part of the dryer and the body to loosen retaining clips.

Step 6 - Remove Old Centrifugal Switch

Use a putty knife to hold down the clips while you remove the toe panel. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws positioned at the corners of the panel. Locate the motor and remove the old switch.

Inspect other components in the dryer as well. Look out for dust or dirt build, remove debris using a brush or vacuum. Check for torn or worn out devices. If necessary, make the required replacements. This can include replacing the drive belt and oiling the motor.

Place the new centrifugal switch into position. Make sure it is fixed properly and secure. Then reassemble the device and check whether all devices are fastened in the appliance. Plug the appliance to a power supply and turn on the switch.
