How to Replace a Sprinkler Control Valve

A sprinkler control valve determines the effectiveness of the equipment spraying water on lawns or gardens. If it develops a fault or gets damaged, then it might not let out proper amounts of water. This also affects the pressure at which water gets out of the sprinkler. If you are experiencing such problems with a sprinkler, the control valve can be replaced.

Step 1 - Get Correct Sprinkler Control Valves

There are different brands and designs of control valves for sprinklers. Buy the correct valve as it makes the sprinkler work efficiently and effectively. Get the size of the pipes that connect to the valves to avoid buying large or small-sized equipment. Measure their diameter to get the exact dimension. This should help in getting the best fit for the sprinkler.

Buy other materials such as adhesive or glue that works well in moist or wet conditions. Not all glues are suited for this purpose, buy one that seals metal surfaces effectively.

Step 2 - Remove Old Valves

Locate the sprinkler system in the compound. Turn off the water from the main supply to discontinue the flow in the system. Depending on the design of the equipment, use pliers to loosen the old valve. Apply pressure as it might be very tight at first. However, after a few trials it easily comes off and it can be disconnected from the manifold system.

Step 3 - Replace the Control Valve

Get the new valve and use your hands to place it on the appropriate place on the manifold system. Use pliers or a pipe wrench to fasten the equipment in place. Use some force to secure it in place. It can become loose when the water supply is turned on if it is not fixed tightly on the manifold.

Step 4 - Check the New Control Valve

After the valve is securely fixed in the sprinkler system, turn on the water supply from the main point. Turn on the new sprinkler control valve and check the pressure and amount of water being released from the system. If the pressure is good, then regulate or control it to the desired point. However, if it is too low, then try and find if there are other problems with the sprinkler and water supply system. Check for breakages in the piping system or pressure from the main water supply point. This should easily put the sprinkler back to good working condition.


To protect valves from damage, have them fixed below the ground. A metal box can be placed at the sides and the top to make room when controlling the valves.
