There are many different types of vacuum cleaners, including canisters, uprights, bagless models, and newer styles that say they never lose suction. One thing that you will see on many models is some kind of hose that allows attachments to be used on furniture or to dust or to reach up to the ceiling. If the hose develops a leak, then the air pressure is reduced and the vacuum cleaner becomes a much less effective cleaning machine. A new hose must be installed to make the vacuum work as it did before.
Step 1 - Determine Make and Model of Vacuum
Vacuum hoses are made for the specific make and model of your vacuum. Write down the manufacturer's name and the model. Go to a hardware store or vacuum supply store. You can also call the manufacturer or go to its web site. A new hose is needed that is the exact size for your vacuum. It should also be the right length. If your vacuum is a canister or other smaller model, you just attach the new hose and start cleaning. If it is an upright with one end of the hose permanently attached, you need to do some vacuum cleaner surgery.
Step 2 - Remove the Old Hose
If you still have an instruction manual for your vacuum, read it and see if it gives any instructions for changing the hose. If you don't have one, you may be able to download one at the manufacturer's web site. This procedure may require unscrewing a panel on the vacuum and getting inside to take out the old hose. It may involve just pulling the hose firmly with pliers. Make sure you are doing the correct procedure so you don't damage your vacuum. If there is any doubt, call the manufacturer or take the whole machine to a shop that fixes vacuum cleaners.
Step 3 - Attach the New Hose
Once again, follow the instructions. Don't lose any screws as you opened up the vacuum. Put everything back the way it was before you started. Once the new hose is in, put it in the holder on the side of the vacuum to make sure it will stay there as it was designed to do.
Step 4 - Test the Vacuum
Put the hose in place, then turn on the machine and make sure it vacuums well. Some are designed so that the hose has to be placed in a hole in the machine during normal operation, then taken out when attachments are used. Test it while in the hole and while using an attachment.
Replacing a vacuum cleaner hose should not be very complicated. Manufacturers know that the flexible plastic hose is the most likely part of the system to leak or get a hole in it. Once it is done, your vacuum should be as good as new.
