How to Replace Aluminum Soffit Panels

Soffit panels are a finishing touch that is given to any roof job or siding task. They are placed on the underside of the overhangs of the roof. They are used to connect the roof with the siding and should be installed for ventilation purpose properly on the exterior of your house, depending on how you want to match the new ones with your current panels that are attached to the siding. This is a very important factor when you are changing the soffit panels. Soffit boards are made of different materials like wood, aluminium, cement fiber or chipboard. Soffit boards are often fixed to the rafters under the eaves or verges. Here is how to replace aluminum soffit panels.

Tools and Materials

  • Aluminum soffit panels
  • Soffit vents
  • Fascia panel
  • F-channel strips
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Nail gun
  • Tape measure
  • Circular saw
  • Cordless drill

Step 1:  Check to See Where the Problem Is

Check to see which part of the soffit you would need to change. After examining everything properly you can decide if you want to change the entire soffit or just a part of it. If it is old or is not in the right condition, you would need to change the entire soffit.

Step 2: Remove the Old Panels

Replace the old soffit panels using the F-channels, which are small strips that help to secure an end of the soffit panel. Use the fascia cover from the old soffit. With a pry bar, remove the cover of the fascia and the F-channel from the overhang of the roof.

Step 3: Install the New F-Channel

Take the F-Channel strips and install it on the underside of the overhang of the roof. Attach the F-Channel to the rafter with a hammer and nails where the previous old strip was located, or using the nail gun.

Step 4: Take Proper Measurements

Measure the inner edge of the fascia to the F-channel. Cut the soffit panels to the size that you got from the measurement after subtracting a 1/4 inch. Use a special circular saw for this.

Step 5: Install the Soffit

Install the first soffit panel by placing one edge in the F-channel. Use a framing square to make sure you've lined up the panel squarely with the sub fascia.

Step 6: Secure the Soffit

Secure the panel to the sub fascia by hammering a nail into the soffit panel's V-groove (a small channel located in the center of the panel).

Step 7: Place the Net Panel

Install the net panel in the F-channel and lock the first panel that is placed by sliding it into each other. Continue the same procedure for all the remaining panels.

Step 8: Attach the Fascia

Finally attach the fascia to the soffit of the roof to finish the installation. To cover the edges of the panels of the soffit, attach the lip of the fascia to the bottom.
