How to Replace Aluminum Storm Window Latches

window latch

If you have been having problems with your aluminum storm window latches lately, it may be time for their replacement. Installation is not difficult, and it should only take you a few minutes to replace the old with the new. Make sure that you also get a latch plate as well, just in case the existing one is a different size and won't work with the new latches. Here is your guide to get started:

Remove the Old Latch

After you have purchased the new latch set, remove the old latch set from the storm window. You do this by using your screwdriver to remove the screws that kept the latch in place. Put the screws close by in case you need them again. Then take the latch off the window.

Remove the Plate (Optional)

If you are removing the plate as well, simply remove the screws just like you did before. Set those to the side, separate from the others so you know what screws go with what component. Then remove the plate from its position on the window.

Check the Latch and Plate

Take the latches you purchased and match them to the new plate. Make sure the holes line up properly so the two components will latch together.

Screw the New Plate in

Screw the plate into the spot the old one occupied and secure it tightly with your screwdriver. You may have to adjust the holes a little bit with a drill if the new latch doesn't fit properly. Simply make a mark where the new holes need to go, then drill and screw appropriately.

Attach the Latches

Now place the new latches where the old ones were. Make sure they line up properly and then screw them in with your Philips head screwdriver. Tug on them a bit to ensure that they are on there nice and tight.

Test the Latch

Make sure latches latch properly. If they do, the job is finished and you can employ the new latches for your aluminum storm windows as much as you want. If something does not fit correctly, not you may have to do some adjustments until they latch smoothly. This may include moving the screw holes as you did before or just tugging on everything a bit. You can loosen the screws and move the unit until the latch works. Then tighten the screws once again and see if it works.
