An evaporative cooler pump or desert cooler is used to cool a home in a dry climate regions. The water is stored in the tank at the foot to keep a depth of about 3 to 5 inches. The pump is used to sprinkle water on the evaporating pads at the rate of around 1000 to 2000 liters per hour to an approximate height of 3 to 8 feet, sufficient to cool a room. The vertical design of cooler pump enables to pump water even from a low water level in the cooler tank. The water is delivered by the water pump to distributor, which sends the water to all the cooling pads on the sides of the cooler. This evaporating type cooling pads are just like large cardboard air filters. Air is sucked through the wet pads, and it gets cooled by water. The cool air is pumped into the house through usual air duct. A house with many bigger rooms will require a high capacity pump to cool the whole house. If the building is too large, you may need two or more pumps. If you need to replace an evaporative cooler pump in your home, follow the simple steps below to do the job on your own.
Step 1: Preparation
Before you begin, ensure that your replacement pump matches the same specifications of your old pump so that it can properly lift the ware.
Disconnect power to the cooler from mains. It is always safer to do so when you repair any equipment.
Step 2: Removing the Pump and Getting New Pump
Open the side of cooler by taking out one of the cooling pad panels. Disconnect the electric wires to the pump terminal from the switch panel of the cooler.
Remove the hose clamp of the hose connecting the pump to water distributor. Remove any other hose clamps, if required. Now, remove the hose connecting to pump by pinching with pliers and pulling it out. Remove the pump.
Step 3: Check Bleed Line and Bleed Tee and Cap
Remove and replace the bleed line, if required. The bleed line serves for overflow of water from cooler.
Step 4: Installing the New Pump
Clean the mesh pump basket, and place the new pump inside the mesh filter bag. Many modern pumps have their own mesh for filtering. Fix the pump hose to the pump and clamp it. Attach the other end of hose to the distributor and clamp it. Check the float valve also. Re-fix the bleed line to bleed tee.
Step 5: Connect the Electric Wires
Connect the wires from switch panel to the pump terminals. Oil the fan, and check and adjust the fan belt as well. Clean the cooler water tank and refill it. Connect the cooler to mains and restore the power.
