How to Replace an RV Toilet Flange

The RV toilet flange in your RV does not need regular replacing, but when problems persist due to rust and corrosion, the flange needs to be removed and changed. Since the toilet flange is connected directly to the black water tank in your RV, it is best to flush out the contents of the black water tank before addressing the toilet. This will help eliminate nasty odors that may prove uncomfortable when working on the RV toilet. You also need to turn off the water supply on the RV. Flush the toilet to get rid of excess water. With that being said, here are the easy steps on how to replace an RV toilet flange.

Tools and Materials Needed:

New toilet flange
Wrench
Screwdriver
Chisel (optional)
Putty knife (optional)
Rubber flange seal
Safety gloves
Safety mask

Step 1 – Remove the RV Toilet

Use a wrench to loosen the bolts that secure the toilet to the floor. The toilet may be held in place by 2 to 4 bolts, depending on the type of toilet installed. Pull the toilet upwards after loosening the bolts and nuts. Set the toilet aside.

Step 2 – Remove the Flange

Use a putty knife to remove the flange seal. You will need to remove the flange seal before it can be turned counterclockwise. The flange seal may be made from either rubber or wax. A flange seal made of wax would be melted on the attachment and require a few scrapes with a putty knife to efficiently remove it.

Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the screws that hold the flange to the floor. This may require a bit of force, especially on extremely corroded surfaces. Turn the flange counterclockwise using your hands to remove it from tank. Rust and corrosion may also be present on the threaded fitting on the tank and may make the flange difficult to turn. A quick spray of liquid lubricant will do the trick. In the case of a glued or cemented flange, you may need to use a chisel to break the cemented part on the flange. Tap the chisel lightly with a hammer to help break the glue or cement.

Step 3 – Install New Toilet Flange

Install the new RV toilet flange by turning it in a clockwise direction. If the black water tank does not have a threaded fitting, you may need to use waterproof marine adhesive to secure the flange to the tank. Replace the screws that hold the flange to the floor. Install the new rubber flange seal to help prevent leaks and ensure a tight fit.

Step 4 – Reinstall RV Toilet

Place the RV toilet on top of the new flange and tighten the bolts that hold the toilet in place. Turn on the water supply and flush the toilet a few times to check for leaks. Retighten all connections when necessary.
