Experienced sports boat owners will know that their boat stringers, the strips attached to the boat bottom to stabilize the boat and keep the hull from twisting or cracking, may eventually become broken or rotted and will need to be replaced, or supported. You, as the boat owner, can replace or add new support to these stringers. Here's how:
Step 1 – Determine the Length You'll Need Your Stringers
Use a measuring tape and measure the length of your boat bottom on which you'll attach your new stringers.
Step 2 – Cut Your Stringers to Size
Using a saw, cut your 2"X 3" wood strips to fit the length of the existing stringers.
Step 3 – Lay Fiberglass Patches
Lay your new stringer alongside the existing stringers. Cut patches of fiberglass about 1' wide and 15" long. Lay these patches across the tops of the new and old stringers.
Step 4 – Apply Epoxy Resin
Mix your epoxy resin and apply it to the boat's floor stringers where you'll adhere the fiberglass. Soak your fiberglass with the resin and form it against the boat bottom and stringers, and allow it to harden.
Step 5 - Secure with Bolts
Drill bolt holes through your stringers, insert bolts and nuts, then tighten to secure.
