How to Replace the Lock on Your Truckbed Toolbox

There is varying designs for toolbox. They differ in the type of material used for their construction, appliances’ dimensions and features. Common toolbox sizes are 20 to 21 inches wide. Effective equipment should have strong covers secured with efficient locks.

Step 1 – Get Necessary Materials

Buy a new lock from a garage or mechanic’s store. They are also found in hardware stores too. Keep in mind the type of lock to buy, the new item should have the same material and qualities as the tool box. Get screws and obtain other tools necessary to carry out the job. Some equipment can be borrowed from rentals and returned after completing the task.

Step 2 – Remove Old Lock

Make sure that automobile is in positioned safely. Clear out enough working space and locate the toolbox to be repaired. For metal toolboxes, use a screw driver to remove the old lock. Apply some force as the screws may be tightly fixed to the box. There are tool box that have locks fixed using bolts. Use a pair of pliers to unlock the bolts from the box.

Step 3 – Inspect the Tool Box

Check the condition of the toolbox before fixing the new lock. Empty the container and inspect for any damages, rust, corrosion or dirt. Clean the box using a small brush and empty the dirt and debris. If there are bolts or screws that need replacement, put new ones to keep the toolbox in good condition.

Step 4 – Fix New Lock

Get the new lock and position it on the toolbox. Use screws that are in good condition to fix the lock. Place them on each hole and attach them to the holes in the tool box. Drive them using screwdriver to secure and fasten them in place.

For locks that use bolts and nuts, only use those that are in good condition. Position the bolt and nut in place and use a pair of pliers to tighten and fasten them.

Step 5 – Performance Check

After fixing the new lock on the toolbox, try and close it to check whether the new device is working correctly. Make sure it falls into position so as to secure equipments that are placed in the toolbox. If there are problems with the fitting then adjust the new lock for it to close properly.


  • It is advisable to buy steel toolboxes as they are durable and they do not damage or develop faults easily. Avoid plastic toolboxes.
  • Toolboxes can be reinforced with appropriate coating to prevent them from rusting and corrosion.
  • Inspect toolboxes often. Check that it is strongly secured in position and that important components, such as locks, are in good condition.
  • Make sure that toolboxes have all necessary equipment required for automobile repair.
