When it comes to replacing vinyl window trim there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind. You are going to need to replace your vinyl window trim on your window frames to help prevent discoloration as well as cracking. This is a process that is actually very simple as long as you have the right tools and knowhow for the job. In order to get the right replacement trim you will need to get it through the manufacturer that you went through to get your actual window. Getting the improper trim is something that will only end up causing you more issues than your old trim was.
Step 1 – Analyze the Trim
The first thing that you are going to have to do is figure out which pieces of trim overlap over each other. Typically, your side trim is going to overlap both the lower and the upper beads. The ones that overlap are the ones that you are going to have to take off first. Trying to take the ones underneath off first is going to prove to be a more difficult task than it is worth.
Step 2 – Pry Off Trim
Once you have figured out what overlaps what you are now ready to get your putty knife blade inserted into the seam. You will put it in between the actual trim and the window frame. Once you have it good and in there you will need to twist the handle of your putty knife. By twisting it correctly you will be able to pry off the front of your trim and off of your window frame. You will then need to get the putty knife slid down the length of your trim so that you can completely get rid it from your frame. You will do this until it is all removed.
Step 3 - Pry Lower Trim
You are now ready to move on to the pieces of trim that were underneath the overlapping pieces. This is where you will need the help of a friend. They will have to hold on to the glass of your window as you do this. If nobody is there to hold the glass it will fall out.
Step 4 - Measure Window Frame
Get the top part of your window frame measured and then take the results to the replacement pieces of trim. Make sure that they are accurate to avoid any problems during installation. Cut through your trim as needed.
Step 5 - Finish Up
Press your trim up and over your glass and press down on the channel of your trim. You will repeat the previously mentioned step until you are finished measuring and installing the pieces. Measure your lower and upper pieces on either side. You will then once again be ready to move these measurements onto your replacement pieces of vinyl. The pieces will then be able to be pushed directly into place with only your hands.
