Restoring Old Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are very durable roofing materials and with proper care, they can last for a long time. To extend the life of your asphalt shingles and to keep your roofing in top shape, you need to restore your old asphalt shingles from time to time. To restore old asphalt shingles, here are some tips.

Clean Up

If your asphalt shingles are fairly new, a good cleaning is all they need to look good. Remove dirt and debris from the surface of the roof and around the gutters.

Repair Small Holes and Cracks

Apply caulking material on the small holes and cracks on the asphalt shingles, then let it dry completely. If there are curled shingles on your roof, use cement to put the shingles back in their original position. Take care not to crack or chip the shingles when you push them back into place. Use the right roofing nails to reinforce the shingles when necessary.

Apply Fresh Paint

Using a paint roller or a pressure paint sprayer, apply a fresh coat of paint on your roofing shingles. Let the first coat of paint dry completely before you apply another layer. For best results, you should apply two to three layers of fresh paint.
