Restringing Venetian blinds is not as hard as it sounds. Whether your blinds are made of vinyl, real wood, faux wood or even aluminum, the restringing process is basically the same. Doing the restringing yourself saves you the expense of replacing your Venetian blinds when they begin to show wear, especially if you have the more costly wood blinds.
Step 1 – Take down Blinds
The first thing that you will need to do dismantle the blinds from their metal brackets. This is as simple as lifting them out of the slot. If you are having trouble lifting them out, use a flathead screwdriver to try to pry them from the brackets. If that doesn't work, get on a ladder to see what is causing them to stick.
Step 2 – Pull Old String
Once you have the blinds removed, you are ready to remove the string. Lay your venetian blinds down on a flat surface and untie the knot that is located on the string under the bottom rail. If you cannot untie the knot, you may want to cut the string with a pair of scissors. With the string untied or cut you will be able to pull it from all of the holes that are in the slats.
Step 3 – Cut New String
Take the old string and lay it flat and completely stretched out. Use it as a template for your new string so that have the proper length. Once the new string is cut you are ready to thread it through the blinds. Start at the head rail and go down from there.
Step 4 – Secure New String
Once the new string is in place you will need to pull it through the bottom rail and double knot the string. If you have any excess string once you have pulled it through and knotted it then you will need to cut this string with your scissors.
Step 5 – Rehang Blinds
Once the blinds have been restrung, it's time to rehang them. Get them hooked back onto the brackets and check to make sure that they hang as they should and are the right length. If they are not, take them off and repeat the previous steps.
Step 6 – Proper Care
You will find that there are little things that you can do to make sure that the blinds and string last as long as possible. For instance, try not to lower or lift the blinds when they are still open. Also, try not to lower or raise your blinds to the same spot each time.
