How to Seal a Granite Countertop

What You'll Need
Rags or towels
Countertop cleaner

A granite countertop needs to be sealed at least once a year. If the water soaks into the stone, it is time to seal the countertop. Most seals that are sold in home improvement and hardware stores seal the countertop for at least a year.

Step 1: Purchasing Sealer

Purchase a sealer. Ensure the sealer is made for granite surfaces. Remove all items that are kept on the granite countertop.

Step 2: Cleaning the Countertop

Clean the countertop using an old rag or a towel. Make sure all dust is removed from the countertop. Use a stone cleaner to clean the surface. Apply the cleaner and let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing it. Use a clean towel to dry the surface.

Step 3: Applying Sealer

Use a clean brush to apply the sealer on the surface and allow it to dry. This may take 3 to 5 minutes. Apply a second coat of sealer on the surface. Rub the surface with a clean towel or cloth.

Step 4: Drying

Allow the sealer to dry. This can take from 3 to 5 hours, depending upon the brand of sealer being used.

Step 5: Third Coat

Apply a third coat of sealer on the granite countertop and allow it to dry for at least 5 hours.
