Decorative gable vents are used by many people to add a little bit of character to their attic ventilation. They can have many different designs, the most common being a wrought-iron swirl. Setting up decorative gable vents is an easy process and does not require a lot of time.
Step 1 - Cut Hole in Gable
Measure the dimensions of the gable vent and cut the hole with the Sawzall tool.
Step 2 - Place Flashing Around Hole
Place a small bead of caulking around the hole you just cut out and bend some aluminum flashing all around the hole. Leave a 1/4 inch strip on the inside of the cut with 1/2 inch on the outside.
Step 3 - Place Decorative Gable Vent in Hole
Once you have the preparation completed, you can set the decorative gable vent into the hole. Position it square into the hole and check with a level.
Step 4 - Attach Securely to Gable
After you have placed the decorative vent in the hole on the gable, secure it with nails. Use galvanized nails and hammer them straight into the wood. Try not to bend them over. This will puncture the vent and scratch or break it.
