Sewing a silk sleeping bag liner is a great idea to make your sleeping bag more comfortable while also protecting it. In simple terms a sleeping bag liner can serve the purpose as sheets do on a mattress. Hence you can see that it is quite an important element to add to your sleeping bag if you do not already have one attached to it. Regardless of that, it is also a good idea to sew up an extra one so as to have a spare at hand in case of any kind of dirt or accidents which might unfortunately ruin your sleeping bag.
Step 1: Measure and Purchase The Fabric Required
First of all you need to measure the sleeping bag. By means of these measurements, try to calculate how much fabric you need so as to create the desired size. You need to provide an allowance for sewing, stitching and hemming. Silk is a good choice to make a sleeping bag liner because it is a smooth material which makes the sleeping bag’s interior feel even more comfortable. It is also easy to sew and lightweight. Besides it can be washed easily and it dries very quickly.
Step 2: Cut the Silk
Once you have purchased the silk and acquired all the other requirements you can start cutting the silk according to dimensions recorded. Use good quality fabric scissors and try to be as accurate as possible.
Step 3: Fold and Sew The Sides
Fold the silk piece in half horizontally. Then, sew up one of the sides which are parallel to the fold. Fold over the remaining raw edges about one inch and hem them downwards.
Step 4: Cut and Sew The Lower Part
Afterwards cut the lower part of the silk in a circular shape. You can do so simply by cutting the corners and then continuing to form a semicircle. Then fold it upwards slightly and sew up the edges.
Step 5: Sew the Zipper Or Velcro
The next step is to sew the zipper or Velcro to the silk. Both are popular, however for children’s sleeping bags usually Velcro is more commonly used. The zipper or Velcro has to be attached on the remaining side. Usually it is best to attach it to the right side. Once ready turn the liner right side out.
Step 6: Sew the Elastic Parts
At this point, cut the elastic in two equal pieces. Sew each one on either side at the bottom part of the liner. Sew them in a loop shape. These will help to make the liner easier to fold upwards.
Step 7: Install It In The Sleeping Bag
Install the sleeping bag liner in your sleeping bag to see if it fits well.
As you can see anyone can manage to sew up a sleeping bag liner as it is a very simple sewing job which can be done pretty quickly. Besides it will save you money and you can do it according to your tastes and preferences when it come to size, color and patterns.
