You can use a bench grinder to sharpen drill bits, especially those used for drilling into metal. Here are four steps that will help you complete the job.
Step 1 - Gather Supplies
Before beginning to grind your bit, be sure to don safety glasses or a face shield, as well as leather gloves. These will protect you from flying particles and sparks.
Step 2 - Grind the Bit
Use pliers to hold the bit firmly by its base end. Turn your bench grinder on and set it at low speed.
Hold the flat, beveled end of the bit against the turning grinder wheel. Keep the bit point from touching the grinder. Grind the bit for only two or three seconds before you cool it.
Step 3 - Cool the Bit
Dip the bit into a container of water to cool it.
File
Finish sharpening by filing the bit with a metal file.
