How to Soundproof a Wall After Construction

It is easier to soundproof a wall than you may imagine. You may want to soundproof your entire home or a single room for a number of reasons, like to keep conversations indoors or to record music in a home studio. Follow the steps below to learn how to soundproof your walls without spending a fortune on the process.

Take Appropriate Precautions

Position the ladder on a flat, stable surface so that it doesn’t topple over while you work. Keep in mind that the razor knife and the hammer can cause injuries and should be used with extreme caution, especially while working from a ladder. In addition to this, make sure that the ceiling fan is powered off while working on higher parts of the wall.

Prepare the Wall(s)

The wall must be smooth before you can apply the soundproofing material. Use a hammer to remove any nails and sandpaper to smoothen rough plaster or bumps. Wear a face mask while sanding to save your lungs from the dust. After the wall has been smoothened, move on to the next step.

Take Proper Measurements

Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of the wall that is to be soundproofed. Make sure that this is done accurately and that the measurements are noted down so you can refer to them while installing the egg crate foam.

Install the Egg Crate Foam

Use a sharp razor knife to cut smaller sections from the sheet that you purchased. This ensures control over the material, as longer sheets are difficult to install. After the sections have been cut, apply a strong adhesive on the backside of the panel and leave to partially dry. This will increase the bonding power of the glue as long as it is not dried further.

Start applying the foam from the ceiling downward. Use your hand to smooth any wrinkles or folds that might form.

Install Egg Crates

For a cheaper alternative, consider using common egg crates, which are cardboard boxes used to store eggs. You can find these at recycling centers or restaurants. Make sure that the crates you buy are not damaged or extremely dirty. After you have purchased the crates, apply strong adhesive on the grooves at the back and stick on the wall starting from one corner. Stick egg crates all over the walls, and trim them off for corner installation. Make sure to clean and dust crates before you install them.

Finish Up

Line the door and window linings with spare pieces of egg crate or simple foam. This will ensure that the sound does not escape from the minute air spaces. Test to note a marked difference in the amount of sound transmitted from the room.
