A bench grinder is a great tool to use for many different applications. Sometimes it runs smoothly and great and other times you will find it just begins to vibrate and shake. With a little bit of investigative work you can determine where the vibrations are coming from.
1. Purchase a Diamond Wheel Dresser
This tool is used to reshape the wheel. The wheel dressing is applied to the rim of the grind wheel and files down the areas that are off shape or not uniform. The wheel dresser will grind down the grinder so that it is fully uniform and balanced. By balancing the wheel you should be able to reduce the vibrations or make the vibrations disappear altogether.
2. Get a New Wheel
Sometimes when the wheel on a bench grinder comes out of line the state is too severe for a wheel dresser to fix. In this case, the best thing to do is to replace the wheel.
3. Mount Grinder on Rubber
This is a small do-it-yourself trick. If you are experiencing a great deal of vibration you can muffle and reduce those vibrations by adding a piece of rubber matting underneath your bench grinder.
4. Lubricate the Spindle Bearings
Another approach you can take to smooth out the operation of your bench grinder is through lubrication. Purchase a lubricant made specifically for your bench grinder. Apply a small amount of the lubricant to the spindle bearings found on your bench grinder. Rotate the wheel several times and apply more lubricant as necessary.
