How to Stain and Seal Wooden Porch Benches

Staining and sealing porch benches is the same process as staining and sealing any other piece of wood that would be used outdoors. You may already have the products you need around the house from other projects.

You Will Need

• Stain
• Sealer
• Brushes
• Sandpaper
• Mineral spirits
• Rags

Step 1: Prepare the Wood

Use the sandpaper to lightly sand the wood of the porch benches. This will open up the pores of the wood so it will accept stain more readily. It will also eliminate rough or scratched areas in the wood. Be sure to wipe away all sawdust before continuing the project.

Step 2: Apply the Stain

Open the stain and stir it. The thick substance you may dip up from the bottom of the can is the pigment. Be sure all of this is blended into the liquid part of the stain. Dip in the brush and brush it onto the surface of the wood, going with the grain of the wood. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for at least 10 minutes, then use a cloth to wipe away the excess. If you are satisfied with the color, allow the stain to dry. If not, apply another coat of stain.

Step 3: Sealing

Some stains contain a sealer but if the stain you chose doesn't, then you will need to apply a clear one. Dip a clean brush into the sealer and apply it to the dry wood. Apply in the direction of the grain in a light, even coating. Allow to dry and apply a second coat.
