A Torx screwdriver can come in various shapes and sizes. Those who are not familiar with the Torx screwdriver commonly use the terms star screwdriver to refer to it. If you are not familiar with the use of this screwdriver, read on to find out how simple it is to use them.

The Torx screwdriver was initially limited for use by manufacturers for fear that consumers might start disassembling their items that use such types of screws. However, this type of driver has become more accessible to the general public, usually made available through hardware shops and automotive parts stores. They are also made available online. Still, there are some screws that are made tamper-proof and have a post in the middle of the screw to avoid anyone from removing it with the use of the Torx driver.

The Torx screwdriver is much like the Phillips head model only that it uses a six-pointed star shape in its head. These drivers also come in various sizes – from 1 through 100 – with the smallest measuring around 0.031 inches and the largest measuring around 0.871 inches. You can also purchase these drivers in bulk, so you will not have a hard time finding the right size of drivers to use on your screws. Kits are readily available through various hardware stores.

Step 1 – Determine the Screw

Different types of screws will need different types of screwdrivers. Make sure you are familiar with the type of screw you are working on to help you determine if you need a Torx screwdriver for the job.

Step 2 – Position the Screwdriver

Place the tip of your screwdriver into the head of the screw. Make sure that they fit well – the entire tip is inside the head – before doing anything else.

Step 3 – Apply Some Pressure

When your Torx screwdriver is already locked in place, hold on to the handle of the screwdriver and press down firmly on it.

Step 4 – Make the Right Turn

Which way to turn your screwdriver will depend on what you want to do. If you are inserting the screw into wood or some other type of material, the way to go is clockwise, or right to left. If you are unscrewing or removing the screw from the material, you should turn it the opposite way or counterclockwise which means going from the left to the right.

Step 5 – Free the Screw

Keep turning your Torx screwdriver until the screw is secure, if you are inserting it. This will usually mean that you cannot turn the screw any more to the right because it is already tight into the material. If you are removing the screw, turn the driver counterclockwise until the screw comes out of the wood or whatever material that you are working on.
