How to Use Foil Faced Insulation Board

Using foil faced insulation is one option in choosing the insulation for your house. Foil-faced insulation board installs a little differently than your rolled insulation.

Follow the steps below to explore ways to install your board insulation.

Build a Frame

If you are installing your insulation in an area that is already framed up, then you do not need to worry about this step. However, the board insulation needs something to attach to and fit into when dealing with this type of thing. For that matter, you need to have a frame for the insulation to be attached to. If no frame is present, you must first build that.

Measure

Using your tape measure, you will want to measure the area between your framing boards. This is what your insulation needs to match up to, so just to be safe, you should measure each space that is present before you cut any pieces of board.

Cut the Board

Now that you have your measurements it is time to start cutting the boards to fit. This is done by using your utility knife. The easiest, and safest way of doing this is to first slightly cut or draw a line where you want your boards to be separated. Then you can actually bend the board, and cut through all the way so it comes out exactly how you measured it.

Fit the Boards into Place

Take the measured and cut insulation boards and place them into the areas where you are doing the insulation. Because you measured twice and cut once, they should right into place, creating a snug fit.

Secure

There are different option you can go with to make sure your insulation stays in place once you've put it in its spot. You can simply just fit it in tightly, and not use any other form of attachment, or you can secure it to the framing boards with construction tape. Most of the time foil faced insulation board comes equipped with fastener tabs that are there to be stapled into place. Either option is fine, just make sure they are in there securely.

Cover with Drywall

Now that you have all your insulation boards securely attached to the framing boards, it is time to cover your hard work up. Foil-faced insulation boards are not fireproof, and need to be covered with drywall for added protection.
