Drip Cap

Silicone Caulk
Exterior Paint

An exterior door drip cap prevents water damage to the door frame as a result of rain and snow. Installing a drip cap is a simple process that can be completed in a few hours.

Step 1

Decide if you will install a storm door. Most storm doors have a drip cap included as part of the installation kit. However, if you will not be installing a storm door, then you will need to purchase an individual drip cap.
Drip caps come according to the door size. Typical door sizes are 32, 34 and 36 inches. Purchase a drip cap according to the size of your exterior door.

Step 2

Set the drip cap channel at the top of the door frame. Center the cap as you place it on the frame.

Step 3

Apply a layer of silicone caulk to the drip cap. This will prevent water from going between the drip cap and the door frame and causing damage.

Step 4

Screw the drip cap into place with galvanized screws or the screws provided in the storm door kit.

Step 5

Apply a coat of exterior paint over the drip cap screws to blend them in with the exterior door frame.
