Box gutters are available in a wide range of sizes and styles; they are made from wood and metal such as aluminum, steel, copper, and stainless steel which are coated to improve their water handling capabilities. Poor quality box gutters, installation, and maintenance can result into large expenses to professionally rebuild or repair them.
1. Proper Installation
For box gutters to work effectively, they should be installed by building them into the bottom of the roof or into the roof overhang. The wooden structure should slope to the outlet hole which should be positioned at the lowest point of the gutter. The slope on the gutter should be even, even after lining it with metal so as not to affect the flow of water.
2. How to Lay the Metal Properly
Make sure that all wood in the box gutter is secure and fastened properly before installing the metal. Quality metal to use include tin-coated solid copper roll as it requires minimal maintenance. Consider connecting two pieces of metal with an interlocking S-seam and solder.
3. How to Finish Installation
To finish box gutter installation where tin-coated steel is used, clean it thoroughly after the job is done with rags soaked in mineral spirits. Paint primer can also be used. Do not leave mill oil, soldering flux or other materials behind. Clean the surface and leave it to dry before applying special metal primer. Leave it to dry completely before finishing with a coat of paint.
