Flag poles can be a great addition to your home. They allow you to show pride in your country, your state, your city, or even your favorite sports team. But it is hard to see whatever flag you have hung without a light once the sun sets. Especially in winter months when it is dark more hours a day than it is light, you might want to consider adding a light to your flag pole. Luckily, it's a project you can do yourself with just a few supplies. Since the project does involve electricity, though, you should call in a pro if you have not worked with wires before.
Step 1 - Gather Supplies
Start by gathering all the supplies necessary for your project. A ladder to reach the top of your flag pole and a flashlight to help you see are both necessities. You will also need a light. The manufacturer of your flag pole may have specific lights it recommends you use. If not, someone at your local home improvement store may be able to help you pick the right light. You could also consider using a solar light if you are in an area that gets a lot of sun.

Step 2 - Take Safety Precautions
Make sure you understand how to work with the wiring necessary to install the light. You should also make sure your ladder is sturdy before you begin to climb it.
If possible, have a friend or family member help you. They can hold a flashlight or read directions for you while you are in the air so you have one less thing to worry about.
If you feel uneasy about working with electricity, you can always do the majority of the following steps yourself but call in the pros for the wiring work. It's better to spend a little extra money than hurt yourself.
Step 3 - Install the Power
Attach a plug at one end of the cable you are using for the light. When purchasing the cable with the plug on the end, make sure it is rated high enough for the light you have chosen to install. You will connect the plug to a receptacle outside your home, so make sure it is long enough to reach from your flag pole to the chosen spot on your home.
Step 4 - Dig
Chances are the cable will have to travel some distance across your yard. Because that is unsafe and unsightly as someone could trip over it, you should burry it. Use a spade or other gardening tool to dig into the soil. Make sure you are creating a wide enough hole to fit a conduit, which you will put the power cable into. You should dig at roughly 4 inches below the ground. This will prevent nosy pets from accidentally digging it up or it washing up next time it rains.
Step 5 - Connect
Connect the conduit to where the light will be installed. Now you can cut the cable and connect it to the light. Make sure to follow instructions provided by the manufacturer when doing so.
Step 6 - Adjust
You can adjust the angle of the light now to ensure it is shining on your flag and not into space. And make sure it is not shining in a direction where it will bother your neighbors.
Step 7 - Test
Plug the cable in and test the light.
Step 8 - Fill the Hole
While the area may eventually fill naturally, it is better if you just fill the hole yourself. This will prevent someone from tripping on it and a pet from accidentally biting into it. Do not fill the hole until you are sure everything is working correctly.
Make sure you make a note somewhere of where the hole is. If there are issues down the line, you will know exactly where the line is instead of needed to dig up half your yard to find it.
