Installing an Electric Fence For Horses
An electric fence is a quick and economical way to keep your horses safe. If properly installed and maintained it can outlast other kinds of fences. Here are the steps to installing this type of fencing.
Step 1 - Measure
Measure the length and width of the area to be fenced. Decide how many gates you want and the height of the fence
Step 2 – Buy the Fence
Buy the fencing system. The most widely used type is an electric tape. This type of fence is more visible to the horses. The other option is electric wire but this type is harder for the horse to see.
Step 3 – Set the Posts
Set posts for each corner of the fence and at the sides of each gate opening. These should have that goes down 4 feet into cement.
Step 4 – Set the Line Posts
In between the posts set the line posts. Be sure these are in a straight line by using a string run from post to post.
Step 5 – Add the Lines
Staring with the post nearest the power sauce, add the lines. Use at least 3 strands of wire and make it 4 to 5 feet high.
Step 6 – Add the Grounding System
Set grounding rods. These are galvanized-steel rods pounded into the ground 10 feet apart and connected by insulated cable. The number and placement of these will be recommended by the fence manufacturer.
Step 7 – Connect the Lines
Hook up the lines to the charger.
Step 8 - Test the Fence
Get an initial reading of the voltage on the fence. Then you should monitor the voltage on a regular basis so that you will now if there are any problems along the fence.
