Installing Molding: How to Conceal Nails and Screws

Installing molding is an easy and inexpensive way to change the look of a room. The best way to get a professional and finished look is to hide the installation screws. The following instructions will show you how to conceal screw holes using small pieces of wooden dowels for that professional look.

Step 1- Installing the Molding

Start by placing the correct length of molding against the wall in the desired spot. Use the drill to fasten the piece in to place. Countersink the screws into the molding 3/8th of an inch. Continue this process for each section of molding around the room.

Step 2- Inserting the Dowel

Cut the dowel to the size of the opening just above the screw allowing 1/5th of an inch for the overhang. Place a small amount of wood glue in the screw hole. Place the dowel in the hole and tap in to place using the mallet.

Step 3- Finishing

Sand the dowel until it is flush with the rest of the molding. Wipe away any dust with the lint free cloth. Once the glue has dried completely (usually about 24 hours) you can paint or stain the molding as desired.
