Installing Porch Tiles: 6 Tips
Installing porch tiles is a relatively basic task. Here are a few tips you should bear in mind once you embark on this project.
Tip 1 - Prepare the Base
It is important that the foundation on which the tiles will be installed is properly prepared before commencing the actual installation. You may need to use a grinder to smooth any bumps, rough patches and ridges. You can also use some leveling compound to fill any gaps or holes.
Tip 2 - Cutting the Tiles
While cutting the porch tiles, make sure to wear safety glasses and equipment. It is best to use a wet saw to cut the tiles.
Tip 3 - Placing the Tiles
Spread thinset mortar on the porch and then place the tiles onto this layer, carefully and gently. Place them neatly next to one another and press downwards so as to fasten them to the foundation beneath. Try to avoid moving or sliding the tiles in the process as this will reduce the probability of having them adhere well.
Tip 4 - Spacing
There needs to be some spacing between one tile and the other. It is a good idea to use plastic spacers, to make the grout lines between one tile and another as even and as neat as possible.
Tip 5 - The Grout
When pouring the mixture of grout onto the tiles, make sure to act quickly by delivering it to the most significant parts, especially edges and spacings, and then wiping it immediately afterward to avoid any staining.
Tip 6 - Caulking
Finally, it is important to caulk near the edges and around windows, doors and similar parts. This is important, in order to avoid damage in the future, due to water being retained underneath the tiles.
