It is usually a good idea to put up security bars on your basement windows. Should someone attempt a burglary, they will most often enter through the basement windows. People are less likely to notice or hear these windows being broken. If you have security bars, it will be a lot more difficult for intruders to enter the house.
The first thing that you will need to consider what you want the bars to look like. You have many design options. Custom security bars or adjustable grills are a common choice. The adjustable grills will be easier to find and will usually cost less. The materials will also vary. Cast iron is popular; it can be found in very decorative patterns but may be harder to work with.
The location of the bars is mainly determined by how the windows open. If the windows open inward, then the bars will need to be put between your window and the screen; however, if it slides, then you will need to put your bars on the inside of your window. That way, you will still be able to open the windows to let some fresh air into the basement.
Measure the window opening to ensure that the bars are the right size. A small error will prevent them from fitting properly. Measuring more than once is a good idea so that you know with certainty that your measurements are accurate.
Once have measured the windows and purchased the bars, put them in place and mark where your fastening screws need to go. Drill hole into the window frame so that you can properly install the bars.
Apply the long screws first to make sure that they will go all the way into the window frame. If they go just into the casing, then they are not going to work. If the screws are not long enough, buy more that are 2 sized larger.
Place the bars where you have determined they should go. Line-up the screws with the holes you previously drilled and fasten them to the window. Most bars will have a locking nut device on the inside of the window. Place it and tighten it. Repeat for each bar you are installing.
