Installing skylights are not as hard as you may think. There are a few materials that you will need, along with simple steps to help guide you through the process.

Step 1 - Locate Ceiling Joists

Begin by finding the ceiling joists and measuring the appropriate size depending on the skylight you got. Then, mark with a pencil along the edges that you will need to cut. You will also need to match up the same area outside to be cut form that angle as well.

Step 2 - Work Inside

Follow along the lines that you made with a saw for drywall. Cut out completely and then around the edges. Once the opening from the inside is complete, clear the area underneath and staple a tarp or plastic sheet so that the debris from the roof does not get inside.

Step 3 - Work Outside

Now, go outside and find the area that you marked. Use a saw to again cut along the lines. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles as you work. Place the bracket that comes with the skylight into the cut out and then screw them in accordingly onto the roof. Place the light in and secure it according to directions.

Step 4 - Finish Up

Once you are finished you will want to come back inside and remove the plastic. You will want to caulk around the edges inside with a caulking gun and allow it to dry before doing any decorating. Once it is dry you can prime and paint around the wall so that it blends in.
